What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest?
Sudden Cardiac Arrest occurs suddenly and often without warning. It is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs, and other organs. Seconds later, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. Death occurs within minutes if the victim does not receive treatment.

Is Sudden Cardiac Arrest the same as a Heart Attack?
No, SCA and Heart Attack are not the same. A Heart Attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked and Sudden Cardiac Arrest is when the heart malfunctions and suddenly stops beating unexpectedly. A Heart Attack is a “circulation” problem and Sudden Cardiac Arrest is an “electrical” problem of the heart.

What is a Heart Attack?
A Heart Attack occurs when a blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by that artery begins to die. The longer a person goes without treatment, the greater the damage. Symptoms of a Heart Attack may be immediate and intense. Though, more often than not, symptoms start slowly and persist for hours, days, or weeks before a Heart Attack. Unlike Sudden Cardiac Arrest, the heart usually does not stop beating during a Heart Attack.

Are the only people at risk for Sudden Cardiac Arrest those with heart disease?
No, Sudden Cardiac Arrest can affect anyone, at any time. It is the leading killer with over 7-9 million deaths per year worldwide. In fact, it kills more people than breast, lung, and colon cancer combined.

Does Sudden Cardiac Arrest only affect old people?
No, Sudden Cardiac Arrest can affect anyone, at any age.

Why do I or my loved one need Elliot if AEDs can be found in public spaces like stadiums, gyms, or office buildings?
While AEDs can be found in stadiums, gyms, or in other public places, most Sudden Cardiac Arrests occur in the home where people don’t have access to this lifesaving device. Over 70% of all Sudden Cardiac Arrests happen in the home. When seconds matter between life and death from SCA, waiting for the ambulance to arrive isn’t an option. Having Elliot in your home could mean that your loved one will be around to help celebrate more birthdays and anniversaries. Be empowered!

When do you use an AED?
An AED should be used whenever someone is unresponsive and not breathing or not breathing normally. An AED will only shock the heart if needed so when in doubt, apply the pads!

Why can’t I just do CPR?
An electrical shock from an AED is the only way to treat SCA. For the best chance of survival, the shock should be delivered within 3-4 minutes of collapse. CPR will help keep oxygen supplied to the brain but it will not help restore the heart’s rhythm.

How does the HeartHero AED, Elliot, work?
Elliot is intuitive and has visual and audio prompts to guide the user through the process. Simply push the green power button and pull the red tab to turn on the device and release the pads. When the device is turned on and the sticky pads are applied to the chest, Elliot reads the person’s heart rhythm to determine whether or not a shock to the heart is needed. Instructions will guide the user to stand back while a shock is delivered. If more shocks are needed, the AED will announce and deliver those shocks. Elliot will also call EMS and any listed emergency contacts automatically. The device will NOT shock a person if their heart does not need shocking, making Elliot safe to use if you are not sure if a person is in Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).
